Is this you? You saw an e-mail or an internet post describing how you can generate free leads through Facebook. So you downloaded the e-book or listened to the webinar, and then immediately began trying to apply what you digested.

So you’ve opened a Facebook account and set up your profile…nothing fancy, just a few blurbs about some of the things you may like to do in your spare time. You didn’t take a lot of time to really think about what you’re going to convey through your profile…after all, this is just a means to an end, right? This is just a way to find more people to show your business opportunity to. This is just a tool for you to GET more leads so you can GET more affiliate commissions so you can GET more sign-ups into your MLM opportunity so you can GET more bonus checks…right? That’s what “so-and-so overnight internet marketing guru” said on his packed webinar! (Not!)

So why the heck isn’t this working? I followed all the steps Mr. Guru outlined. I added 50 friends a day. I created a group and invited them all to join. I blasted them with my marketing e-mail messages. Where are my 20+ leads a day from Facebook?

My friend, let me tell you. This is NOT a scam. The leads are out there. They are just avoiding you because your approach has been all twisted. Your tactics do not invite people to connect with you; on the contrary, you wreak of the latest fragrance from MLM Buster Company – it’s called “Salesperson.” And just like those pesky perfumers in the mall, everyone’s avoiding you because they see you coming with that bottle in your hand. You, my friend, have forgotten the one key point that will boost an internet marketer’s success and is the foundation of the attraction marketing philosophy: you must connect with people!

Here are a few of the behaviors I had to correct in myself and my down line team before we started generating leads from Facebook:

1. Be a person, not a “salesperson.”

A person is looking for friendship and a networking opportunity. A salesperson is looking for clients. A person takes the time to connect with individuals based on common interests. (Ex. Hi Doug. I see that you’re from Hartford and you mentioned what a huge UCONN fan you are. Have you ever visited the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield?) A salesperson doesn’t take the time to connect, preferring instead to send spammy messages about the latest killer biz op.

2. Fill out the profile (I mean really fill it out!)

It’s one thing to list “The Matrix” as one of your favorite films. It’s a whole other thing to talk about what exactly you liked about the film. What’s your favorite line from the movie, and why does it resonate with you? What’s your favorite scene? What character did you go as last Hallowe’en? Don’t be afraid to be a total fan boy (or girl), as this let’s the reader in on just how passionate you are about whatever it is you like. Shared passion creates connections.

3. Give, give, give value!

We hear about this all the time in network marketing. And yet so many of us focus on what we stand to GET from our relationships rather than what we can extend to others. People will sense you coming from a mile away, so give them positive feelings to tune into rather than vibes that make them want to squeeze their wallets tighter.

4. Take a moment to respond to personal messages and comments on your wall.

People that write on your wall or send you messages are casting their line for appreciation. Appreciate them and I guarantee they’ll return the favor.

Marketing is about showing people that you can help solve their problems, but you can’t be of much help to someone that you know NOTHING about. MLM’s top internet marketing producers understand this and are using this knowledge to profit with social network marketing strategies. Don’t reinvent the wheel – do as they do. And as always, don’t just take my word for it. Take it for checking.

The Law Lie of Attraction

Regardless of your spiritual beliefs, you cannot ignore that there is an expanding spiritual movement centered around the Law of Attraction. Even the media mogul, Oprah Winfrey, took two whole days to discuss this topic and the video “The Secret” on her show. And as internet network marketing professionals, we should all know about Mike Dillard and his philosophy of Attraction Marketing.

So if this article’s title caught your attention, it is because some part of the “attraction” philosophy – the idea that you draw all your desires toward you rather than chase after them – is intriguing. And some of you have had success at applying the attraction principles, but many of you are flat out failing. And it’s no wonder. The whole “attraction” philosophy has within it a fatal flaw guaranteed to cause failure.

That’s right. I said it!

There IS NO LAW OF ATTRACTION. IT IS A LIE!

Now hold up…wait a minute! Before all you Big Wigs start picking up the phone to sick your lawyers on me to cease and desist, let me explain what I mean. The “law of attraction” is not a lie in the sense that we were deceived. Rather, it is what I like to think of as a misnomer. I absolutely LOVED “The Secret,” and I still give away copies of it to friends and colleagues. I LOVE Magnetic Sponsoring; it’s mandatory reading for my down line, and I recommend it to anyone that visits my website. But I, like many, have applied the principle of “attraction” for years to create some PHENOMENAL results…results that I could not sustain. Over the course of about 15 years, I repeated the pattern of having incredible success, only to sabotage it just as swiftly by what I can only describe as a series of unfortunate events. My friends have this saying…”Girl, you’re the luckiest unlucky person we’ve ever known!”

I was able to break the cycle only when I learned and mastered this one principle: THERE IS NO LAW OF ATTRACTION. THERE IS ONLY THE LAW OF BEING!

Everything we experience is a reflection of our mental focus. When we focus on HAVING our desires, we get experiences of HAVING. When we focus on WANTING our desires, we get experiences of WANTING. Think about it. Make a mental list of 10 things you want. Then make a list of 10 things you have. I guarantee you that those two lists contain different items. You can’t WANT something and simultaneously HAVE it.

Now, here’s the fatal flaw of the so-called “law” of attraction. The term “attraction” suggests that your desire is OUTSIDE of you – IT’s over there, YOU’RE over here. How can you HAVE something you DON’T HAVE? (Re-read that sentence until you get it!) You don’t create 50 leads a day by trying to GET 50 leads a day – yet, that’s exactly what we do when we set the intention of “attracting” 50 leads a day.

Contrarily, understanding the Law of Being helps us realize that there is nothing to attract. We need only BE that which we want to experience. Spend your time imagining what it’s like to BE a network marketer that generates 50 leads a day: what’s your interaction like with these leads? What schedule changes have you made to accommodate them? What’s your strategy for helping them succeed in their MLM business? Tapping into your sense of BEING-NESS is the key!

And here’s the irony! When you listen to Oprah, when you watch “The Secret,” when you read or listen to any of Mike Dillard’s material, they may be calling it “attraction,” but THEY ARE ALL TALKING ABOUT BEING-NESS! I subscribe to Mike Dillard’s newsletters, and recently I got one where he talked about how he hates shopping at Wal-Mart. The reasoning was that his BEING-NESS clashed with the penny-pinching, save-a-buck, bargain-hunting mentality that the store advertises. In other words: you can’t experience abundance if you have a poverty mind-set. This truth has nothing to do with “attraction,” but it has EVERYTHING to do with BEING-NESS!

Here’s bottom line: focus on BEING rather than “attracting,” and watch your results multiply. And as usual, don’t take my word for it…take it for checking!

I was recently approached by a good friend who is a fellow network marketing professional and was looking to recruit me for the latest pre-launch MLM opportunity. As one of his pitch tactics, he asked me whether or not I was already in the best MLM on the planet. Of course, I had to chuckle to myself, because Sales Rule #1 is never ask a question that you do not already know the answer to. And obviously, my friend did NOT know my answer to this question, or he would have pitched it differently.

You see, I resoundingly believe that I AM already a member of the best MLM company on the planet. I first got involved with network marketing way back in 1994, so I’ve been around the block a bit. When researching my present MLM opportunity, I came to the table with some steadfast criteria, and I was determined that if any of these factors were lacking, I would not be joining. Here’s my list:

1. What are the start-up costs?

People, do not be fooled by the answers to this question. I asked my friend this question and he literally told me that the startup cost was zero! Zero! Can you believe it? In case my sarcasm is wasted on you, let me just explain: I’m not buying the zero! There are absolutely NO MLM Companies around today where the startup cost is ZERO! What my friend should have explained was that the membership fee is being temporarily waived for the pre-launch period, and that following the pre-launch, the regular registration fee will be blah-blah-blah dollars.

Start-up costs are EXTREMELY important in network marketing, just as in any business. First, there is the initial registration fee. This is what you pay to the MLM company just for signing up. Some initial registration fees can be in excess of $1000; some fees are less than $100, some are free. It all depends upon the company you join. Then, there may be a membership renewal fee, which is due at the beginning of the fiscal year, or every twelve months on your anniversary. Without paying this fee, the company may suspend or even cancel your membership. Some companies have monthly maintenance fees (which you pay for simply continuing to be affiliated with your company), personal website fees (a monthly fee for having a company replicated website or product store), newsletter subscription fees, and online marketing fees and materials costs.

Additionally, many MLM companies require members to make periodic product purchases (aka “personal volume” or PV) in order to qualify for commission payouts. This is important to consider when joining an MLM, as it will figure into your monthly bottom line and determine your profitability from month to month. For example, let’s say that you join ABC MLM Company that distributes various household consumables (toilet paper, cleaning products, etc.) Your membership fee is $40, and in order to qualify for commissions, you must generate a minimum of 300 personal volume points per month through product sales or purchases. Now the average individual that joins an MLM company knows absolutely nothing about marketing, and the learning curve (if you are using the company’s marketing training and materials solely) can be rather steep. This means that selling products and adding reps to your business to offset these costs may take a while, so the 300 points you need to generate must come from your own product purchases; thusly, these figures should be added to the initial start-up cost. Pretty soon, that “free” start-up cost is nothing of the sort, and you’ve spent anywhere from $100 – $500 (maybe more) in your first month. How’s that for a profitable “business opportunity?”

The bottom line is this: make sure you do your research before joining any MLM. Network marketing is an absolutely fantastic business building opportunity that can provide a steady residual income if approached from the proper perspective. Knowing and preparing for your up-front costs can save you tremendous time, effort, and money in the long run. But as usual, don’t just take my word for it…take it for checking!

Can You Release This Barrier to Success? Part II

continued from previous post…

Now anyone can understand why a brand new little baby would associate the fear of rejection with dying. But, c’mon now. As adults, the thought that we must avoid feeling rejected for fear of dying is absurd! And yet, that is exactly what is happening when one of your prospects tells you “I don’t want to sell anything,” or “Will I be required to have those home meetings?” These are code words which really mean, “I don’t want to be rejected.” Couple this with the fact that most MLMers are using antiquated marketing techniques that do not work for the average person, and it’s no wonder people say that converting prospects into distributors is so hard!

And now…the Good News! It is INCREDIBLY EASY to correct this irrational fear. You see, since the evidence of this thought is false and merely appears real, we simply need to resist reacting to situations that trigger the fear-of-rejection response. I’ll give you a personal example. A few months back, I reviewed some statistics within my lead system back office. I became very upset to see that the ratio of conversion rates to unique impressions was so low. I initially took this information to mean that I was driving good traffic to my site, but once there, visitors were uninterested in the site’s content—in other words, my visitors were “rejecting me.”

It's not real...Stop reacting as if it is!

It's not real...Stop reacting as if it is!

Now, had I allowed this F.E.A.R. to persist, I may have decided that I ought to avoid the future possibility of rejection by refusing to monitor site statistics, or by cancelling my subscription, or by getting out of network marketing altogether. All of these possibilities would have been mistakes detrimental to my success. Instead, corrected this behavior by:

    1. Interrupting the negative feelings – Take a time out
    2. Telling the truth about the situation – The truth of this situation is:
    3. These negative feelings are irrational –They have absolutely no basis in anything that is real
    4. My problem (low statistical ratio) had nothing to do with my feelings (fear of rejection)
    5. My problem was one that I could easily solve without sabotaging my success — Releasing the emotional charge surrounding the site statistics review, so that when I perform the review again, I do not have the emotional response.

After clearing my head, I chose to consult with one of my company’s top earners, who helped me make great changes that turned around the problem immediately.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I found this process to be very tedious at first. I was a person that had almost no control of my emotions, especially the negative ones. Oh, sure, I was great a repressing my feelings whenever I felt victimized or under-appreciated. But inside, I was a bubbling cauldron of negativity. I hated how impotent I felt, and in the beginning, doing this process was like fighting a constant battle between the person I thought I was and the person I wanted to be. But I’ve seen the transformation in others that resulted from releasing the fear of rejection, so I pressed through the discomfort until the new fear-less thoughts began to shine through. People still said “no” to my opportunity, but I stopped saying “no” to myself when they did, and just like that, the sting of rejection was gone.

People, please consider the wealth implications of what I’ve just shared with you. Think of all the things we all could be, do, and have if we just learned to squash the fear-of-rejection gollum.

Crush your fear and take back your prosperity!

Crush your fear and take back your prosperity!

Think of all the time you would save by refusing to dwell on the unimportant reasons why people say “no” to our MLM opportunity. That’s time you could spend empowering those that say “yes.” Think of all the saved relationships resulting from allowing people to say “no” and having no hard feelings. You never know if or when that prospect will return and inquire about your opportunity. Think of the dynamic down lines we will build as we help these folks overcome their fear of rejection. And as always, don’t just think…take it for checking!

Can You Release This Barrier to Success? Part I

We can make a difference for these people!

We can make a difference for these people!

Let’s face it people. There is one word that can accurately sum up America’s general feeling about the economy: TOASTED! Month after month, we hear nothing but reports on growing economic deflation, shrinking American industries, and record job losses. But there is a silver lining. As more jobs are shipped overseas, the appeal of network marketing grows, and current MLMers are experiencing an unprecedented opportunity to be truly helpful to those seeking to create a stable, residual income.

So why are there still so many people wrinkling their eyebrows, scrunching their noses, and rolling their eyes when they are approached by friends and family members inviting them to a “business opportunity meeting?” Unfortunately, they are simply acting out a conditioned response that has been hard-wired into our psyches since we were born.

I’m talking about the fear of rejection. The fear of rejection in social situations, (sometimes associated with specific social phobia) ranks in the top five of the most common phobias. Most commonly, the fear of rejection in social situations centers around public speaking, whether in a large group or one-on-one. And when you think of it, the fear of being rejected is very easy to understand and empathize with. After all, even as babies, we learn that excess crying or being overly fussy causes our parents to need time away from us. As young children, this behavior is reinforced by rewards when we do something “good” and punishments when we do something “bad.” By the time we become full-fledged adults, we have been completely conditioned to seek approval from all manner of outside forces, and to avoid situations where we may feel rejected. On a deep, primal, emotional level, we are all still little babies thinking, “If mother rejects me, she won’t take care of me, and I will DIE!”

Now wait a minute! I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking, “Is she really trying to convince me that my anxiety about giving speeches in public means that I think my life is in danger? Gimme a break!” It does sound very far-fetched. But think about it. You’re hosting your first MLM home meeting, and you’ve invited some of your good friends and colleagues from work. The meeting is starting, and you get up in the front of the room to start your presentation. Your heart begins to beat faster, you feel a little warm. You sway from side to side while you begin your spiel. You refrain from making much eye contact. You may even begin to stutter a bit, and you really just want it to be over so you can get out of there. And this example represents one of the tamest responses – think of what happens with people who are just morbidly afraid, the ones who won’t even bother to sign up for your business opportunity because they know that soon it will be their turn to sweat.

Don't let the fear of rejection keep you POOR!

Don't let the fear of rejection keep you POOR!

What just happened here? The physical responses – the swaying, the accelerated heart beat, the stuttering – that’s your adrenaline pumping. Your brain is turning on your fight-or-flight response system, and it’s designed to prepare you to run…literally. Your brain was conditioned as a baby to equate rejection with impending death, so your adult body is getting ready to flee! And this entire process begins in a split second – you don’t even give it a thought, you just react. This is what a conditioned response is. You’ve been conditioned to avoid rejection like it’s the plague, and your brain literally believes that it IS the plague.

So how can you possibly counteract this program running in your mind? And further, how can you help the people in your downline do the same?

If you live in America, you’ve heard it, just as I have: The economy is in dire straits! Consumer lending, once the very lifeblood of our nation’s money supply, has screeched to an abrupt halt. Unemployment is quickly headed towards double digits for the first time in decades. The financial and automobile industries are in shambles, so much so that government intervention was required. And as jobless claims and layoffs continue to climb, homeowner foreclosures are climbing to astronomical levels. And guess what folks. Financial and economic experts are predicting that this is just the tip of the iceberg!

So what can average Americans do to insulate themselves from this crisis? Go back to school for more education? More education is never a bad thing…but the DEBT in the form of student loans that most often accompanies it is counterproductive to protecting yourself financially. Okay, so how about paying down credit cards and other consumer debt? Excellent idea! Assuming that you are disciplined and you refrain from running up the balances again, this will provide more disposable cash for you after your bills are paid. But then, what do you do with the money left over each month? Toss it into a savings account? Top financial gurus all agree that a steadily growing savings account is the foundation for building most Americans’ financial plans. But rising inflation can easily render that money less valuable as time passes.

Now, before your head explodes from all of the doom and gloom talk, let me make a suggestion: Start a home-based business. Here are some of the benefits of doing so: 1) Home-based businesses work very well for many parents who are already at home with their children. It can eliminate the cost of daycare, and the working hours are most flexible; 2) Many home-based business opportunities have very reasonable start-up costs. In some cases, you can get started with an initial investment of $0-200; 3) The weekly time commitment, in many cases, is very reasonable. Many opportunities only require a minimum of 10-12 hours per week. This is important if you work full-time outside the home, or if you have other commitments, such as children or aging or infirm family members that require your care; 4) No experience is required. The training associated with many opportunities is fantastic and teach valuable skills such as financial and time management, leadership development, team building, and social networking.

There are other benefits to starting a home-based business that are not outlined here. But the bottom line is this: If you are not taking your financial future into your own hands by embracing entrepreneurship, my question to you is, what are you waiting for?
